Learning How to Play Poker

The game of poker can be composed of as few as four players or as many as ten players. With any number of participants, a single deck of playing cards of the standard variety is used. A dealer is chosen, possibly among the players, and the cards are dealt to the left.

Poker players make their bets by deducing who among them holds the highest poker hand even as all hands are hidden. Bets are held in the pot.

Poker hands and their rankings have been agreed upon traditionally to conform to the following order:

1. straight flush, including five appropriately sequenced cards of comparable suits, with an Ace - if used - standing as either the highest card or the lowest card; 2. four of a kind, including four cards of comparable rank and one spare card; 3. full house, including three cards of comparable rank and another two cards of comparable rank; 4. flush, including five cards of comparable suits; 5. straight, including five appropriately sequenced cards of any suit variety; 6. three of a kind, including three cards of comparable rank and two spare cards; 7. two pair, including two sets of two cards with comparable rank and a spare card; 8. one pair, including two cards of comparable rank and three spare cards; and 9. high card or the card with the top value in a hodgepodge hand.

When comparing the same hands, priority is given to the hand with a higher value card in its first combination.

Based on the hand they are holding and their gut feelings on their opponents' hands, poker players call bets, raise the stakes or fold in the game. A player calls a bet by making a bet equal to the value of the preceding player's bet. A player raises the stakes of the game by making a bet higher than the value of the preceding player's bet. A player folds when not willing to make any bet. It is a surrender, forfeiting all claims to previous bets placed.

The round is finished after all players have had their turn at making bets or folding. All players still in the game are then asked to make a show of hands. This is also called a showdown. It displays all hands for judging.

If one player succeeds in making all others fold, though, then that player wins with no show of hands needed.
